New West theatre to present historical comedy

New Westminster’s Vagabond Players will be presenting a unique comedy that presents a skewed look at history this spring with The Revolutionists.

Set during the French Revolution, the play stars four disparate historical figures in assassin Charlotte Cordray, queen Marie Antoinette, Haitian rebel Marianne Angelle, and assassin Charlotte Cordray, in an imagined girl-power friendship. Including black comedy and musical numbers, the Lauren Gunderson play takes a light approach to significant issues like art and politics. The Vagabond Players production will be directed by Samantha Alexandra with stage management by Connor Hogg and production by Dwayne Campbell. The central quartet will be played by Ina Wang, Kelsey Robertson, Marion Landers and Katherine Morris.

The play will run across three weekends, with Sunday performances being afternoon matinées. Local theatrical performances often draw on local volunteers and businesses, such as printing services for programs or vintage stores for costumes. This is the final production of the Vagabond Players’ 2024-25 season, which has also included the plays Mauritius, Tick Tick Boom, and A Nice Indian Boy. The company boasts of being the oldest community theatre in the province, with its origins going back to 1922.

The Vagabond Players’ production of The Revolutionists will run on select dates from April 24 to May 11 at the Bernie Legge Theatre in Queen’s Park, New Westminster.
