New West theatre to host unique hybrid work

New Westminster’s Massey Theatre will be hosting a unique presentation by local DJ Kid Koala in Kid Koala: The Storyville Mosquito.

The production will combine arts such as puppetry, film, music, and live performance. Aimed at an all-ages audience, the work tells the story of a young mosquito seeking fame in the big city by auditioning for a legendary band. A team of 14 performers will animate the story using miniature sets and live puppetry as well as pre-recorded video. DJ Kid Koala will perform with a string trio, involving improvisational music and plot twists to make sure every performance is different. Part of Koala’s many efforts to experiment with form, and the event is described as a:

“Funny, emotive, Chaplin-esque live theatre experience that’s fun for the entire family.”

The Storyville Mosquito is part of the Massey Presents series, which aims to bring boundary-pushing theatrical presentations to a New Westminster audience. It will be the second event in the series following an October performance by the eight-piece Oktopus brass band. Theatre and music performances such as this often use inventive marketing ranging from banner printing to social media to help draw in audiences from the Metro Vancouver program.

Kid Koala: The Storyville Mosquito will be performed at the Massey Theatre on the evening of November 25 and the afternoon of November 26.
