New West park adds bike features

New Westminster’s Queen’s Park has recently opened a new bike skills area, designed to allow for jumping and tricks.

The area consists of seven features attached by a gravel path, located near the tree nursery and the Centennial Lodge parking lot. Included are ramps and low fences designed for jumping or grinding. The bike skills area is designed to be accessible to both new and experienced bikers, and to preserve nearby vegetation. The features were constructed following approval by New Westminster City Council in July 2021.

In a statement, Erika Mashig, New Westminster’s manager of parks and open space planning, expressed the importance of balancing sport use with nature preservation:

“The city intends to engage the users of the bike skills Area in future stewardship events to help work on the track, features and with ongoing ecological restoration. Our hope is that we can all work together to keep the bike park in good shape.”

The bike skills area joins the park’s many features, including the Queen’s Park Arena, an animal petting farm, tennis courts and other sports facilities. The area was added due to increased demand for biking and a desire to protect nearby sensitive areas, where new vegetation has recently been planted These areas often use Signs and banner printing to help notify visitors of safety rules and concerns.

Queen’s Park’s bike skills area officially opened to the public earlier this month.
