New West festival to honour Indigenous dance

The Coastal Dance Festival will be holding its 17th annual edition in New Westminster this March, highlighting traditional and new dance Forms from West Coast Indigenous groups.

The festival is hosted by the Dancers of Damelahamid group, who will also perform throughout the event, and hosts guests artists from across North America. Featured groups and artists this year include the Turongo Collective, the Chinook Song Catchers, and Laura Grizzlypaws. The festival will take place over three days, with a Friday afternoon matinee performance aimed at school audiences, as well as evening and afternoon performances across the weekend. The goal of the event is to celebrate traditional Indigenous dance and musical styles:

“The 17th Annual Coastal Dance Festival brings Indigenous artists together to share and support one another in a celebration of lived artistic practices. Guest national and international artists have connected the festival with a global community of Indigenous dance.”

Dances will feature drums, masks, colourful costumes and more. Dance festivals such as this help to preserve and promote specific traditions, often using tools like poster printing and educational outreach to bring in interested people from the local community. The festival is open to audience members of all ages and backgrounds.

The 2024 Coastal Dance Festival is scheduled for March 1 to 3 at the Anvil Centre in New Westminster.
