New West event series to celebrate Canadian culture

This winter, New Westminster will play host to the Outside/Inside event series, which will offer a bimonthly showcase of the culture of different Canadian regions.

True to the name, each event will consist of an outdoor social event in the afternoon followed by an indoor performance, typically involving music and/or dance. The outside “street social” events will include a marketplace full of local vendors, artisans and food merchants, some with ties to the particular region the event is celebrating. Markets like these can be a big boost to small businesses, providing an opportunity to connect with customers through conversation and exchanging Business Cards. There will also be live outdoor music and activities at each event.

The Inside/Outside series will kick off on January 21 with a celebration of British Columbia, marked by a performance of the BC World Music Collective. It will be followed the next week by New Dance Horizons highlighting the culture of Canada’s Prairies. February’s events will pay tribute to the East Coast and Northern Canada, with performances by Morgan Toney and the New North Collective respectively. The series will finish off in March with events themed after Ontario, represented by OKAN, and Quebec, with a performance by Sinha Danse.

All of the Inside/Outside street social events will take place at Hyack Square, with all performances held at Anvil Theatre. Every event is free to attend.
