New West conference to focus on invasive species

The Invasives conference will return to New Westminster this February, bringing together experts in a variety of fields to deal with the issue of invasive species.

The conference will be a forum for discussion on ecological issues, with seminars as well as formats such as lightning talks and “speedy sessions.” Session titles include “From Rooftops to Riverbanks: Invasive Species Management in Urban Habitats” and “Aquatic Invasive Species: Challenges, Impacts, and Solutions.” Among the speakers are agrologists working for the provincial government, university professors, ecological artists, and private industry researchers, with keynote speakers Paulette Fox and Dan Hayes. Organizers of the conference have also said the event aims to embed Indigenous practices and perspectives throughout its programming.

Business and professional conferences such as this allow people from different disciplines and sectors to interact, often trading Business Cards and leading to unique collaborations. Invasives 2024 will provide plenty of networking opportunities, with food breaks and special meetings on the first and final days of the conference. The goal is to find new approaches and share recent research related to combating invasive species, which are a major issue in areas such as New Westminster and the surrounding British Columbia forests. The conference is organized by the Invasive Species Council of BC.

Invasives 2024 will take place at the Anvil Centre in New Westminster from February 26 to 29.
