Over the Ridge is an expansion of “Ridge”, a 2020 musical storytelling work by the Fugitives, which is based on the experience of Canadian soldiers during the World War I Battle of Vimy Ridge. Over the Ridge adds dance and movement to the work, alongside songs from the Juno-Award nominated album Trench Songs. The dance portion of the show is created in collaboration with choreographer Jacob Williams, the Massey Theatre Society, Ballet BC and Arts Umbrella.
Fugitives frontman Brendan McLeod acts as writer, with director Julia Course helming the stage show, which is advertised as:
“A kinetic ride through history that delves our strong connection to the past, and passionately argues against the exploitation of young lives.”
The show incorporates historical readings, film, and re-imaginings of songs written by soldiers in the trenches of World War I France, which will include distinctive instruments such as the banjo and violin. Over the Ridge is part of the Massey Theatre’s 2023-24 season. Theatrical shows such as this often incorporate multiple disciplines and are promoted through methods such as poster printing and social media.
Over the Ridge will premiere on April 13 at the Massey Theatre in New Westminster. There will be two shows, one in the afternoon and one in the evening.
