New Westminster now has a program designed to help keep people living with Parkinson’s disease moving and as active as possible, while collecting data that will help the organizers determine its progress.
The new walking routine, which began on April 11th, is being facilitated by the Parkinson Society of BC. Called Step by Step, each week a volunteer walk leader will determine a different route for the walkers, and also provide them with their own pedometers so that they can record the number of steps that they.
The goal is to slowly increase the distance they can walk, at a pace they will not find to be too strenuous.
According to the coordinator for educational support services with the organization, keeping active is one of the best ways to both manage and even reduce the symptoms that people living with this disease experience.
Research has shown this, and it is being applied in a practical way. Brochure printers can provide pamphlets that give more information about the walking program, as well as how it can provide a number of benefits.
Nine different communities from all around the British Columbia region will be taking part in this pilot project. Those who are interested in participating are invited to call the Parkinson Society or visit its webpage for further details.
