The Global Tea Series will be presenting a concert in New Westminster this January, bringing together world musicians representing styles with deep traditions behind them.
The event will be headlined by Cassius Khan, advertised as the most recognizable Indian Classical musician in Canada. Khan performs the traditional style of Ghazal or Thumri singing and Tabla drumming, combining the two into a unique style dubbed “Tarannum Ang Gayaki”, with singing and drumming at different rhythms. Also performing will be Angelique Muhorakeye, a member of the Indangamirwa traditional dance group that performs in a style blending Rwandan traditional dance with hip hop and Afro-fusion.
Rounding out the performance is Ugandan dance performer and drummer Edward Sembatya, whose performances are rooted in indigenous East African music and narratives. Like other shows in the monthly Global Tea Series, the concert is a pay-what-you can performance, with audiences encouraged to donate what they are able at the door. Specialty tea and other refreshments will also be available.
World music concerts are often advertised with eye-catching poster printing, incorporating traditional styles of artwork, along with radio marketing. Khan will also be involved in future editions of the series, performing alongside Bosnian violinist Zelko Krakan and guitarist Dave Martone in the months to come.
The Global Tea Series with Cassius Khan will take place at Studio 1C at the Massey Theatre in New Westminster on January 26.
