This September, the African Heritage Music and Dance Society will hold its annual music and dance festival, featuring sounds and traditions from across the African continent and its diaspora.
The African Heritage Festival of Music and Dance, also known as AHFOMAD, brings together dancers and musicians for three days of performances and more. This year’s festival will feature artists such as Dremo, Selmor Mtukudzi, and Alpha Yaya Diallo. There will also be DJs including Vinnie B and King B. The festival’s stated goals are to provide an opportunity for African-Canadian artists and boost the local economy:
“Our Mandate is to create a sustainable festival event that will be a platform for BC African Canadian Artists to showcase their creations and have opportunity to develop and grow in a progressive, productive, and truly inclusive accessible arts and culture environment.”
The festival has been hosted annually, with this year’s being the 8th edition, and has brought in major international artists, as well as local up-and-comers. The Society has also worked with other groups to bring African artists such as Sauti Sol to Canada for multi-city tours. In addition to the live music and dance, there will be art and workshops to help people channel their creativity. Cultural festivals such as this often use flyer printing and social media to help bring in people from the local community, whether they be performers or audience members.
The 2023 African Heritage Festival of Music and Dance will take place at the Massey Theatre in New Westminster from September 1 to 3.
