What's Happening in Delta, BC…

New festival to light up Delta

The City of Delta will be adding a new event to its calendar this October, holding its first ever DIYAFest, celebrating South Asian culture.

The festival is designed to coincide with the traditional celebrations of Bandi Chhor Divas and Diwali, promoting cultural unity. The event will feature dance performances and music played by a live DJ, with performers selected from the Delta community. Attendees can also take part in interactive activities like henna body painting, diya decorating and illuminated mini-golf.

The finale of DIYAFest will include an outdoor laser light show and a showing of a Bollywood movie, which will be family friendly. The festival was announced as part of the city’s Event Strategy in June, along with September’s Ladders, Lights & Loaders event hosted by the Delta Fire Department.

In a statement, Mayor George V. Harvie said of the festival:

“I‘m also looking forward to adding DIYAfest to the City‘s events calendar this fall, bringing the community closer together through the sharing and celebration of cultural traditions.”

The city will be gathering information on DIYAFest and other events to further modify its annual events calendar. Cultural celebrations like this often use municipal resources and poster printing to help welcome the local community.

The inaugural edition of DIYAFest will take place on October 17 at the North Delta Recreation Centre and North Delta Centre for the Arts.
