What's Happening in Delta, BC…

New bike route headed to Delta

The city of Delta has announced that it will be opening a new cycling route this June, taking bikers from Barns to Beaches.

The route will stretch 16 kilometres from the Ladner area to the beaches of Tsawwassen. The route will feature branded signage leading to local businesses such as breweries, cafes and farm stands. Both ends of the route will feature a repair stand, pump and bike rack, as well as kiosks reminding riders of local farming activity. There will also be distance markers along the route and signs recognizing local historic sites such as Gilcrist Barn and Southlands Red Barn. The path codifies a route that became popular among local cyclists during the COVID-19 pandemic and markets the area as a day-trip destination.

The path itself combines a number of existing segments for cycling along farm roads and a multi-use pathway through Boundary Bay. The route is the product of a $150,000 grant from the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport’s Destination Development Fund, and two years of planning from the municipal government. Local authorities often use methods like brochure printing and signage to help promote new routes and make them easy to navigate for cyclists and pedestrians.

The Barns to Beaches bicycle route will officially open on June 1, to commemorate Bike Month in Delta. The route will run from River Road near 72nd Street to Market Avenue at the Southlands.
