Mother Nature can be full of surprises, and one of these will be explored during a Delta area dyeing workshop.
The students in the Harnessing Colour from Nature class will discover how colourful dyes can be extracted from an assortment of plants and other natural sources. The group will be working with flowers, seeds, roots, shoots and leaves to dye fabric, and it will be a hands-on activity.
This three-hour long session will introduce the art of creating colourful textiles from natural sources, and tips will be shared for getting the fabrics to take on the dyes being used. Various techniques, such as Shibori and drip dyeing, are on the agenda, and at the end of the class, everyone who participates will have a completed project to take home with them. Anyone who would like to purchase a ticket can do so for $105 each.
A workshop like this can give a person the basic skills they need to begin crafting. Offering each attendee additional learning materials to take home with them will allow them to continue once the session is over, and these can be prepared by area Print shops.
The Southlands Grange Centre for Farming and Food in North Delta will be hosting this introduction to natural dyes on September 26th. It is located at 6336 3 Avenue.
