Coquitlam will soon be celebrating its 125th birthday, and if things go as planned, it will have a newly constructed performance amphitheatre in which to host some of the festivities.
The city has made a final decision about which design to use, and the facility will be known as the Town Centre Park Plaza. The structure is designed to hold between 900 and 1,300, depending upon the situation. The plan calls for it to be constructed on the eastern shore of Lafarge Lake, because the naturally sloping ground can be used to accommodate seating spaces.
The final price tag for the amphitheatre comes in at $2.7m. A catalog printing firm will be able to produce full color Brochures of the artist’s conceptual drawings of the completed structure and other materials that can be distributed to the public and other stakeholders who may be interested in the project.
There was discussion among the council members about the final size of the project, and whether or not there are enough washroom facilities in the vicinity to accommodate the size of crowd it is intended to attract. The mayor remarked that the staff is investigating the feasibility of adding more washrooms to the park.
For his part, Cr. Craig Hodge pointed out that this will be a showpiece for the city and will provide a gathering space for its residents.
