The Coquitlam Heritage organization at Mackin House has announced that it will be holding a Mid-Autumn Moon Family Day, inspired by an East Asian holiday.
This event, the third annual installment, will feature performances from a number of East Asian cultural groups. These include Uzume Taiko Japanese drumming, a traditional lion dance from the Shao Lin Hung Gar team, and musical performances from the BC Chinese Music Ensemble and Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra. Children and the young at heart are also invited to sample traditional moon cakes and have their face painted. The event is part of Coquitlam’s Culture Days celebration, an annual initiative held across Canada, and is free to attend.
The celebration will also include representatives from local organizations such as the Coquitlam Public Library, Opus Art Supplies, and Asian Impact Society. These will include an Asian art exhibition displaced by the Place des Arts.
The Mid-Autumn Festival is typically held around the fall equinox, and it is known under various names in East Asian countries, including Tsukimi in Japan, Chuseok in Korea, and Tet in Vietnam. Celebrations around the world use traditional activities and graphic design to channel the heritage of their regions.
The 2023 Mid-Autumn Moon Family Day celebrations at Mackin House in Coquitlam will take place on the afternoon of September 23.
