What's Happening in Coquitlam, BC…

The touring Ebony Roots show will be coming to Coquitlam this February, aiming to highlight the Black community’s musical experience.

The show will feature songs from across the past 300 years, culminating in modern musical style like blues, soul, and R&B, with an emphasis on how the contributions of Black and African artists have impacted North American Music. The show will feature performances from a number of BC-based artists, including vocalist Leo D.E Johnson, guitarist Olaf de Shield, and guest pianist Benjamin Sigerson.

Ebony Roots was produced and created by Brandon Thornhill, who also performs musically in the show, with support from the Sound the Alarm musical theatre company. The concert consists of two acts with an intermission, and ranges from traditional songs like “Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen” to contemporary hits like “Let the Good Times Roll.” The show first premiered in 2024 where it sold out Vancouver’s Yaletown Roadhouse.

The Coquitlam appearance of Ebony Roots is part of a tour that will visit eight British Columbia municipalities in February 2026, aiming to highlight Black History Month in North America. Concerts like this often use poster printing, radio advertising and other grassroots methods to help connect to the local community.

Ebony Roots will be performed in Coquitlam on the evening of Thursday, February 19 at the Evergreen Cultural Centre.
