The Coquitlam Heritage Museum will be turning its attention to more recent cultural history this September with a special event commemorating the Roots of K-Pop.
The Roots of K-Pop will be a month-long exhibit located at the Coquitlam Public radio, featuring photographs and information on the rise of Korean pop music from a niche genre to a worldwide sensation. The exhibit is part of Coquitlam Heritage’s efforts to feature modern culture and reach out to audiences at different venues, which has included rotating library exhibits. Displays like this often use tools like Signs and brochure printing to provide context to rare items.
The exhibit will lead up to two special events taking place at the end of the month. On the evening of September 27, DJ Sophia Seo will be broadcasting a “Roots of K-Pop” music show on FM 100.5. The following day there will be a live celebration and broadcasts with DJs and an MC from KTV Media Production. Each DJ will provide their own point of view on the genre’s roots and history. Admission will be free, and visitors are welcome to enjoy snacks and browse the museum’s Mackin House collection and other exhibits, including “Retro Reflections: A Nostalgic Journey Through 40 Years of Coquitlam Heritage” and “Life in a Period Home”.
The Roots of K-Pop will be on display at the Poirier Branch of the Coquitlam Public Library from September 1 to 30. The live DJ broadcast will take place at Mackin House on the morning of September 28.
