The 2023 John Buchanan Golf Classic will take place in Coquitlam this April, paying tribute to long-time Simon Fraser University (SFU) athletics director John Buchanan while raising money for charity.
The event will be a casual, four-player scramble golf tournament, with each player tackling 18 holes in a fast-paced format. There will also be individual contests on the course and prizes for holes in one. The evening will conclude with a buffet dinner and presentation of prizes to the day’s winners. There will be efforts throughout to pay tribute to the legacy of John Buchanan, who was SFU’s Director of Recreation for three decades and paid pivotal roles in its championship-winning soccer and golf programs, and the tribute is set to include a bagpipe send-off in keeping with Buchanan’s Scottish heritage.
Funds raised through the event, including a silent auction running throughout the day, will go towards the John Buchanan Endowment for Golf at SFU. The Endowment provides funding to one student-athlete involved in golf each year. In addition to individual donations, charitable tournaments and sporting events such as this often use sponsorship from local businesses to raise money, such as branded sign and banner printing. The Golf Classic will look to attract sponsors for everything from individual holes to the event in its entirety.
The 2023 John Buchanan Golf Classic will take place on April 4 at the Vancouver Golf Club in Coquitlam.
