The production was inspired by the changing human relationship with the night, based on Christopher Dewdney’s book Acquainted with the Night. Modern dance pieces will deal with topics ranging from the three nightfall stages to the mythology of the constellations. The goal of the work is to encourage audiences to reconnect with everyday experiences of the natural world:
“World After Dark takes us on an epic voyage through the mysteries of night, inviting us to reclaim the night – a metaphor for the sensual, the embodied, and the feminine.”
World After Dark was created by Shannon Litzenberger, a dancer and choreographer who has worked with some of the top theatre groups in Canada, and was nominated for a Dora Mavor Moore Award. The piece was created as part of residency programs at dance institutions such as the National Ballet of Canada and Canada's National Ballet School, and is now touring with support from national arts organizations at eclectic locations across Canada, including Coquitlam and Salt Spring Island. Dance works often use methods like poster printing and social media to help attract curious audience members.
The Coquitlam performance of World After Dark will take place on the evening of November 20 at the Evergreen Cultural Centre.
