Coquitlam class to benefit native bees

Many people are familiar with honeybees and bumblebees, but there are lots of other species that can be found in Coquitlam, and an upcoming workshop will offer a way for homeowners to invite them into their yard.

Mason bees are a native species that live in Coquitlam, and the participants in the new Mason Bees and Native Pollinators event will get some hands-on experience in building them a home. The session has been organized by BC Bee Supply, and the registration fee is $57.75.

During the two-hour workshop, the group of participants will find out more about mason bees and what makes them well-adapted to area conditions. They will also find out why they are so important to local ecosystems, and how they can benefit a garden or other green space.

When the session is over, the learners will each go home with a “starter cottage” for their yard’s pollinators, and with some luck and a suitable location, it will not be long before some new residents move in.

Those who take part in an activity like this often care about the environment and want to find out ways to protect it. Print shops can prepare informative handouts and other learning materials that can be distributed to each person in the class like this.

BC Bee Supply has scheduled this workshop for January 23rd. It will be held at 4759 Hastings Street in Burnaby.
