Coquitlam area festival to celebrate centenary

Port Coquitlam will be holding the 100th edition of its May Days festival with a super-sized set of festivities.

The annual event stems from traditional May Day festivities and has grown over the century from a small celebration to a major event that draws in attendees from neighbouring areas such as Coquitlam and Pitt Meadows. The event will kick off with an opening ceremony at the Port Coquitlam Community Centre, which will feature maypole dancing and the presentation of the May Day Royal party. The centrepiece of the festivities is the Rotary May Day Parade, which winds through downtown Coquitlam. It culminates in a street festival at Terry Fox Hometown Square with food and craft vendors, headlined by a musical performance by acclaimed country artist JoJo Mason.

Children and teenagers are encouraged to send in artwork that will be featured on Signs, digital billboards, and T-Shirts throughout the festival. Public signage and poster printing is one of the major ways in which festivals such as these promote themselves and create a sense of flavour, so this is a chance for young people to contribute to this effort. In keeping with May Day tradition, local children will also be given “royal” titles, including Ambassadors, Lancers, and Princesses.

Port Coquitlam’s 2023 May Days celebration will take place between May 5 and 13 throughout the town.
