Brochure printers in Coquitlam, B.C., who produce promotional materials for local businesses may soon be getting new business from Vancouver chef Rob Clark. This is due to his recently raised profile as the third-place winner of the Canadian Culinary Championships. Last weekend, Vancouver chef Rob Clark took home the bronze position in the event. Clark is the executive chef of three restaurants: Nu, Raincity Grill, and C. The Canadian Culinary Championships were held only last weekend in Kelowna, B.C., which is a ways away from both Coquitlam and Vancouver. The winner of the championship cook-off was Montreal chef Martin Juneau, who cooks at Newton’s restaurant, while the second-place finisher was St. John’s Jeremy Charles from Raymond’s restaurant.
The cook-off event is a somewhat rigorous competition that stretches out over two days, in which chefs compete in pitched battles that take place three times.
The championships began on Friday evening, and the eight chefs in the contest had to cook a dish for 300 guests who, in a stunning turn, also served as the judges of the dish. One criterion for the dish was that it had to be a complement to a mystery wine. After the wine was revealed, the chefs were given a budget of $500 to shop for ingredients in Kelowna to use in the preparation of the dish. In that way, the championships stole a page from popular TV cooking competitions.
Mr Clark will no doubt wish to capitalize on his recent success by including it in his future advertisements.
