A one-day seminar offering instruction on ‘Beekeeping Basics - Keeping Honeybees for Beginners’, will be held next month in Chilliwack.
The workshop was designed for novice beekeepers or anyone considering a career or hobby in the trade. Those in attendance will be empowered to begin their beekeeping journey, by learning where to get bees from, what equipment is needed to safely keep the insects, and basic bee care and maintenance.
Laura Cameron will be hosting the afternoon workshop. She is an experienced beekeeper, having maintained her own hives for more than five years. Her background includes extensive university education in environmental studies, a six-week organic beekeeping course called Blessed Bee Farm in 2012, and a Ministry of Agriculture Beekeeping course in 2013.
The fee for the seminar is $48, and includes a copy of Cameron’s 76-page ‘Beekeeping Basics Handbook’. Topics covered in the workshop will follow the contents of the handbook closely, including:
- The lifespan of bees
- Rules and bylaws to consider when getting started in beekeeping
- How to inspect the hives
- How to feed the bees
- Beekeeping Calendars with a seasonal schedule for care and maintenance
- Managing diseases and pests
- Special considerations for the queen bee
- How to care for bee stings
The workshop will be held on Saturday, March 24 from 1:00-4:00 PM. Complete details about the seminar will be provided by email after registration on the website.
