Chilliwack play set to reach festival audiences

A play written by a 17-year-old Chilliwack high school student is headed for the big stage.

The work, entitled ‘Holding On’ , was written by Megan Rubeniuk, who is a grade 12 student at G.W. Graham Middle-Secondary School. It will be one of the pieces to be showcased at the upcoming Sears B.C. Drama Festival, which is set to take place at Douglas College.

The series of performances will present different plays written by high school students.

This is the first such win for a pupil in this educational institution’s drama department. A total of 200 works were entered into the contest, and it was one of only three that were chosen. The selection was made by writer John Lazarus.

Many of those who attend the performances will wish to have a souvenir program of the event that includes information about the play and its author. A stationery printing company will be able to provide these.

Holding On tells the story of a teenage boy who faces life after unexpected loss of his girlfriend, who comes back as a ghost to help him face what has happened.

The other plays that won in the competition are Paul and Carla’s Road Trip, written by Josie Aileen Patterson, and Sawkshi Sharma’s Sat Akal India.

The festival will take place from April 30th until May 2nd.
