Chilliwack festival to paint the town

The Chilliwack Mural Festival will be making its return this August, with acclaimed artists creating murals throughout the downtown area.

This year’s muralists include local artists from Chilliwack and Seabird Island as well as international painters from Europe and Latin America. These guests include Argentinian Fio Silva, known for her depictions of animals and organic matter; Belgian street artist NEAN; and Dutch artist Leon Keer, who uses technologies such as augmented reality and video mapping in his work. Among the local representatives are Olivia Malihot and Chief Terry Horne, who both incorporate Indigenous inspiration into their murals.

The artists will spend two weeks painting on buildings across downtown Chilliwack. Their work will be officially unveiled during the weekend-long festival, with live music, vendor booths from local artists and businesses, guided tours of the murals, and more. The festival is a chance to sample modern graphic design as well as to see the streets of the city in a new light. Muralists, vendors, artists and art hosts are selected from online applications from within the community. Kids and youth can also complete a colouring sheet to enter a draw for a gift certificate to the Book Man and art gift pack.

The 2024 Chilliwack Mural Festival will take place from August 15 to 17 in Mill Street, District 1881, and Central Community Park. Art will be painted from August 1 to 14.
