Burnaby Hospital is in the planning stages of the creation of a dedicated space for those who are experiencing mental health issues in the emergency room.
When someone is having a mental health
crisis and they seek help, a quiet space can be much better than a noisy and crowded hospital waiting room, and plans are in the works to create such a space at the Burnaby facility.
Head of the emergency department, Dr. Donna Sue, noted to a reporter from Burnaby Now that when patients arrive in crisis, they can benefit from a calming environment, and this is what they are hoping to achieve.
The project is still in the early planning stages, but a proposal for its implementation could come sometime this year. It would use the success of the similar mental health zone created at Surrey Memorial Hospital as a starting point. A company that designs business Forms can create specialized ones that can be used in an environmental that deals with patients who are in this type of crises.
The emergency department in Burnaby is one of the busiest in BC, and sees almost 80,000 people a year, of which 3,300 are people with mental health issues.
While no specific funding amount has been released, money has already been raised for the project through the efforts of the Burnaby Hospital Foundation’s gala fundraiser which was held in November.
