Proposals of interest sought for Burnaby affordable housing projects

Burnaby has reached one of the initial phases of adding new affordable housing units to the city.

A request has gone live on the B.C. Bid website seeking proposals of interest from companies who may consider taking on the development of nonmarket housing at two sites in the community. The intention of this move is to determine what level of interest there may be in building affordable housing on two parcels of land, which are located at 3802 Hastings Street and 7898 18th Avenue.

Part of the incentive being offered to developers is that these city lands will be leased at a very low price to those who are willing to build affordable housing spaces. This request for proposals of interest is also open to co-ops, not-for-profit groups and senior levels of government.

According to city councilor Colleen Jordan, the expectation is that there will be a lot of interest in this project, and it could be used to build nonmarket rentals, seniors’ residences, co-ops or other types of low-cost homes. Digital copying can be used to make replicas of important documents by those who plan on submitting a proposal for projects such as this
