If everything goes according to plan, there will soon be more spaces available for Burnaby families with small children.

The SFU Childcare Society has received $500,000 in funding from the provincial government’s BC Early Years Strategy that it hopes to use to make ready and operate a modular building as a childcare facility.

The society’s executive director said she is pleased about the funding, and hopes that, after years of no money being made available, it is a sign that things will improve in this regard. Additional funds for the project will come from the SFU Community Trust.

The SFU Childcare Society is hoping to obtain the modular building on the Burnaby School District’s University Highlands Elementary School grounds. If it is able to do so, it will be able to add between 24 to 48 additional childcare spaces to the community.

Once the new facility opens, it may find that it has a need for printed materials. A professional printing company will be able to provide these at a cost that will fit into its budget.

The grant to the childcare society is part of the province’s goal of increasing the number of spots for children by 2000 by the year 2016. According to the SFU Childcare Society’s ED, she would like to see the government increase the funding for childcare so that it is more affordable for families.
