New exhibit in Burnaby highlights First Nations art

The exhibition ‘Recent acquisitions of First Nations and Inuit Prints’ will be taking place at the Burnaby Art Gallery, starting this weekend.

Works from the 1970s and 1980s will be highlighted and features the work of the likes of Kenojuak Ashevak, Robert Davidson, Joseph and Kananginak Pootoogook, Bill Reid and Roy Henry Vickers. An opening reception will be held on the evening before the exhibit opens from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm.

There will be a few related events taking place during the run of the exhibition. Among them Free Family Sunday's on the first Sunday of February and March. Both will have hands-on studio activity; in February the emphasis will be on shapes and stencils and in March it will be story prints. These events should give people an idea of what goes into printmaking and help them appreciate these works of art more.

The Burnaby Art Gallery has a large collection of Northwest Coast Indian Artist Guild works of art and these new pieces add to this significant collection.

This exhibit may be of interest to those in the Burnaby area who work for printing companies, or those who wish to try printmaking themselves.

It is showing at the Burnaby Art Gallery from January 31 to April 6. The gallery is open from Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 am - 4:30 pm and 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday.
