Mental health first aid training to be provided in Burnaby

A training session is being offered in Burnaby that will equip those who take part with a set of skills they can use to provide first aid to a young person experiencing a mental health crisis.

The Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course has been organized by Burnaby Counseling Group. It will teach participants how to recognize Signs that a person may be experiencing a mental health issue or crisis, and what to do until they can get appropriate treatment. It does not teach people how to be counselors.

The training has been geared towards those who work with youths from ages 12 to 24. According to the event’s organizers, this is the age group in which mental health issues often first become apparent. An assortment of topics will be covered, including recognizing and providing first aid for mood disorders, eating disorders, anxiety, psychotic disorders, and deliberate self-harm. Instruction will also be given in what to do in case of a panic attack, acute stress reaction and other emergency situations. Stationery printers can produce certificates of completion to be given to everyone who completes training sessions like this.

The course will take place over two days, starting on November 28th at Boundary View Plaza in Burnaby. The cost to participate is $295. An opportunity to register or find out more can be found on the event’s website.
