Those who work in the entertainment industry whowould like to add to their skill set are welcome to be part of a training opportunity on offer to them this March in Burnaby. It will take a scientific approach to the issue of crowd management.
Eric Stuart, who is a crowd management expert from the UK, will be sharing his science-based methods for controlling pedestrian flows, whether an event is running smoothly or there is an emergency. He will draw on physics, math and behavioral psychology, and the workshop will run for two days.
Those who complete the class will leave with several new additions to their event planning toolbox. They should have a better understanding of the risks of crowds and the difference between crowd management and control. The psychology of large groups will be reviewed, and non-computer modeling methods will be taught. There will also be time spent discussing crowd behavior in an emergency situation, all with a goal of making sure events are both fun and safe for everyone who takes part.
The start date for the training opportunity is March 5, and it will continue throughout March 6. Print shops can prepare manuals for an event like this using comb binding and similar techniques.
