The moderate climate enjoyed by Burnaby and the surrounding areas is well-suited to cultivating magnolias, and an upcoming event will celebrate their beauty.
The Botanical Garden at UBC is home to a collection of magnolia species and cultivars, and a planned tour will pay them a visit in person. While these trees and shrubs provide four seasons of interest, they can be especially attractive in the spring when they bloom. The walk will be led by Douglas Justice, who will share his knowledge during the outing.
The registrants will have an opportunity to discover how UBC is working to study these plants so that they can be conserved for future generations, and both Asian and North American species will be included. Hybrids will be in the mix as well, and everyone who participates can take as many photos of them as they wish. The outing will be held rain or shine, and while children are welcome, the function is geared towards adult learners.
Many home horticulturalists like to add to their knowledge base during workshops and other organized activities like this. Handouts and other materials for these occasions can be obtained from area Stationery printers.
UBC Botanical Garden has made plans to welcome registrants for this Magnolia-themed walk on April 9th. The group will meet up at the Ting lookout before they set off.
