An elementary school in Burnaby will soon have a new decoration that is intended to help build a sense of community between the staff, students, and the surrounding community.
A red cedar log measuring seven feet in length has arrived at Brentwood Park Elementary. Weighing in at 1,500 pounds, it will be used to create a totem pole, which will take pride of place in a location near the school’s office. It was greeted by a First Nations group with drumming, singing, and other celebrations.
The totem pole will be carved by artist Jackie Timothy, of the Tla’amin First Nation, which is located near Powell River. He indicated that his design idea will include an eagle at the top, and also a human being cradled by a mother bear, which represents the nurturing children need to make their way in the world.
The principal told Burnaby Now that the work will be a rallying point for the school, and that it will help to encourage and celebrate diversity. The pole could even be included in the school’s logo or promotional materials, which a professional Print company can provide.
