A new facility for those living with mental health issues is slated to open in Abbotsford.
The center, which will have room for as many as 50 individuals, could open as soon as 2016. The plan is for it to be situated at 33134 Marshall Road, which will put it near the Abbotsford regional Hospital and Cancer Care Center.
It was the former location of the Abbotsford Hospice Society, which will be moving to Homberg House next to the hospital.
The new facility will provide 30 licensed beds and 20 assisted living spaces, and it will be run by the MPA Society, which has been operating these types of care homes for 40 years.
According to its executive director, the licensed beds will provide the highest level of support to those who need it, which included everything from nursing care to meals and medication. Those who will reside in the assisted living units will need much less support.
Brochure printers will be able to create materials that provide more information to those who may need to make use of the services.
Part of the rationale behind this model of care is that it will help people with mental issues to stabilize and eventually be able to live more independently.
Supporting mental health has been identified as one of the areas of priority in the city.
