Abbotsford club lends helping hand

A local community organization has seen the problem of hungry children in the area and handed over a $35,000 cheque to the Abbotsford Food Bank last month.

The Rotary Club, working with 16 corporate partners, the local food bank and other organizations are helping to organize and fund the ‘Blessings in a Backpack’ program, which seeks to make sure that children in need have nutritious food for the weekend days when they are not in school.

Each backpack is filled with breakfasts, lunches, suppers and snacks to provide balanced nutrition. So far, these are provided for 62 children, and a recently announced partnership with Abbotsford Christian Assembly means that there will soon be enough for 25 more. The group has also provided 12 volunteers to shop for food for the Bags, before filling and then delivering them.

So far, the school district has identified at least 100 kids in need in eight of its schools, but it is believed that the numbers could be much higher, with some estimates being as high as 400. Each month, more than 3,000 people use the food bank, and many of them have children at home. Poster printing companies can help by getting the word out and encouraging families who could use the backpack program to let the food bank know.

It costs $525 to fund one backpack for a year, so donations are very welcome. Contributions of time and effort are also needed to keep the program going. Anyone interested in lending a hand is invited to visit the Rotary club’s website.
