YWCA holds annual awareness event in Lethbridge

The YWCA held its 17th annual Week Without Violence earlier this month. This initiative, which began in Lethbridge, has grown to be an international event with thousands of people getting involved each year.

One of the week’s keynote speakers was Lethbridge’s Global News reporter Teri Fikowski, who only recently returned from a six-month trip to Tanzania as part of the Journalists for Human Rights scheme.

During her stay, she got to know the people and cultural traditions of the country, and was able to learn from the region’s media representatives about the challenges they face. They told her about the ways they ask questions and find information, and she was able to share her knowledge about how to report on governments, human rights and other topics that impact the lives of normal people in Canada.

During her address at the conference, she told 120 high school girls about her experiences and also how different the social structure is there.

She spoke about her thoughts on how girls in Lethbridge have so many opportunities available to them, and they should seize every chance the get to experience the world and all it has to offer.

Another feature of the Week Without Violence was a 5km run to raise awareness and encourage people to stand up and speak out when necessary.

Printing companies in Lethbridge are often called upon to help boost publicity around events like the YWCA’s, with members of the public responding particularly well to eye-catching posters and flyers.
