Town of Coaldale celebrates centennial

The Alberta town of Coaldale, located 11 kilometres outside Lethbridge, is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year with a series of celebrations.

Perhaps the biggest of them will occur this weekend with “Coaldale Centennial Homecoming”, an opportunity for former residents to return home, see old friends, and enjoy some rural pastimes.

The homecoming event will include ongoing features like a silent auction, and an antique car display. Events include a pancake breakfast, performances by Polkaholix, and reunions for local high schools.

Other events marking the centennial have been and will continue to occur throughout the year, ranging from a demolition derby, which took place in June to the upcoming Great Coaldale History Race.

A special book, entitled “Coaldale Gems of the Past”, has been created for the occasion. Such Books, typically produced by local printing services, can be crucial for preserving local culture and treasured memories.

Coaldale’s Centennial Homecoming take place from August 2 to 4 throughout the town. While Coaldale may be only 100 years old, it has something of an old-West feel, signified by the sepia photographs and old-school storefronts displayed in the event’s poster printing. It is known for its outdoor attractions such as the Alberta Birds of Prey Centre, the Gem of the West Museum, and the nearby Chin Lakes. Notable children of Coaldale include author Joy Kogawa and NHL player Kyle McLaren.
