Shakespeare company to perform Dickens outdoors

The Lethbridge Shakespeare Performance Society will be holding a special series of outdoor performances of “The Christmas Carol” this December to help Albertans get into the holiday spirit.

The performance will be a fast-paced stage adaptation of Dickens’ classic novella, designed to be completed within an hour to avoid lingering in the December cold. The story of Scrooge’s encounter with the three ghosts of Christmas has been one of the most adapted narratives in modern history, being transformed into countless movies, television shows and stage productions, but the Performance Society will be looking to put their unique spin on it.

This will be the Society’s first performance of a non-Shakespeare story. The organization was formed in 2012 after a successful production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, and has since staged plays like “Romeo and Juliet”, “A Comedy of Errors” and a performance of “The Merry Wives of Windsor” at the same venue this summer.

Theatrical groups across the world keep the works of Shakespeare and other classic authors alive through local productions, often using tools like brochure printing for programs and advertising.

The Lethbridge Shakespeare Performance Society will hold its production of A Christmas Carol on December 8, 15 and 22 at the scenic Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden. The garden will also be hosting a Winter Light Festival throughout the month.
