Public urged to donate blood

Blood donation has often been associated with the phrase ‘giving the gift of life’, and for Lethbridge resident Nathan Burton, this couldn’t ring truer.

Recently, he handed out red carnations to each person who was generous enough to take the time and come to the Lethbridge branch of the Canadian Blood Services and make a donation.

A few months ago, Nathan was unexpectedly diagnosed with a condition that affected his blood’s ability to clot, and a transfusion saved his life. He was in the hospital for a week and missed almost a month of school, but he is now back to his studies and playing soccer. This would not have been possible without someone’s gift.

The Canadian Blood Services had declared the second week of June to be National Blood Donor Week, and with this in mind, eight local banks teamed up to form ‘Bank on Us’, with each accepting the challenge to donate as much blood as possible during that week. Last year, this resulted in 426 donors coming into the clinic, but even if this year matches that goal, another 575 will be needed to meet the demand. Posters and Flyers were produced by poster printing companies to help spread the word.

According to Canadian Blood Services, the need for transfusions is higher in the summer, as this is when more people are out enjoying the nice weather and there tends to be more accidents. Coupled with the usual needs of hospitals and other healthcare facilities, the requirement is very high indeed.
