Local radiologists and the University of Lethbridge are teaming up to provide access to what will be the most powerful magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine in the region.
The U3T MRI Centre will contain a Siemens 3 Tesla MAGNETOM Skyra Magnetic Resonance Imaging System that will greatly increase the possibilities for students and faculty at the Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience to engage in research. It will also be made available to those patients in southern Alberta who are willing to pay for private diagnostic imaging. Brochures can be designed and printed for distribution to members of the public that explain the services the new centre can provide.
Throughout the past few decades, the university’s research in the fields of neuroscience and behavior has led to many discoveries in such areas as memory, movement systems, aging, brain development, recovering from a head injury and addiction. According to the Chair of the U of L's Department of Neuroscience, Dr. Sutherland, the new equipment will allow researchers to study the living brain and its function. He further noted that having this state-of-the-art machine will be of great benefit to students, faculty and area residents alike.
The building that will house the new MRI is currently undergoing renovations, and the plan is for it to be ready to perform its first scans by mid-July.
