Lethbridge’s Fort Whoop-Up will be welcoming history-minded revellers this December for programming designed to celebrate the holidays Victorian-style.
The historic building, in association with the Galt Museum, will feature Nostalgic Noel: A Victorian Affair at Fort Whoop-Up. Visitors can enjoy traditional holiday treats like apple pie, hot chocolate, cider, and the frontier dessert of “tire sur la neige” (maple syrup on snow). The event will also host traditional crafts like crafting bough wreaths, making Christmas cards out of dried flowers, and forging at the blacksmith’s anvil. Visitors can also pay for a horse-drawn carriage ride through Lethbridge’s winter landscape.
The historical venue will also be hosting Christmas at the Fort events featuring holiday celebrations across time, including crafts such as glass jar lanterns and decorating sugar cooking. These days will include performances of Napi’s Santa Show, a musical storytelling performance based on Blackfoot folklore incorporating modern holiday traditions.
Museums and historical societies often invest in brochure printing and replica items to help provide further information about past eras at events like this. These events are aimed at all ages, with pre-registration required, and a small additional fee for Victorian Christmas and carriage rides.
Christmas at the Fort will take place on December 10-11 and 17-18, with Nostalgic Noel taking place from the 13th to 15th, all at Fort Whoop-Up in Lethbridge.
