The New West Theatre is marking 30 years since its formation, and is doing so with a year-end holiday show, simply called ‘Celebrate’. The event is set to feature singing, dancing and comedy in a revue-like format.
Celebrate is described as “a tribute from our family to yours”, and will feature the New West Theatre’s mainstays. It will take place at the company’s regular home of the Genevieve E. Yates Memorial Centre, which makes frequent use of both the intimate black box theatre and the larger proscenium.
The theatre company had its first performance in April of 1990, a music-comedy revue much like Celebrate. Since then, they have branched out to a full theatrical season featuring a variety of genres. It boasts of selling approximately 20, 000 tickets to 100 performances each year. Past shows include Munsch-O-Rama, based off the work of the beloved children’s author, The Hudson Bay Epic, and many original productions. Local theatre companies like New West help to engage the community in artistic creation, and often draw on other local institutions like furniture stores for props or Print shops for program and poster printing.
Celebrate will premiere on December 18 and continue until its run closes on January 4. New West Theatre will also present a holiday play aimed at children, ‘The Legend of the Lost Tooth’, during the same time period. The season closes with Canadian musical ‘Dear Johnny Deere’ in early March 2020.
