Lethbridge museum to highlight broadcasting history

An upcoming event at Lethbridge’s Galt Museum & Archives will showcase the history of TV and radio broadcasting in southern Alberta.

The event will be called “Stand By, 3, 2, 1, You’re On!”, and it will take a storytelling approach to deal with both the mundane aspects and broader purpose of local broadcasting. Elisha Rasmussen will serve as host, and the event will feature discussion from current and former media personalities, including Global Lethbridge’s Station Manager, Bob Johnson, sports broadcasting veteran Brent Seely, Global News anchor Quinn Campbell and former Miss Canada, Rene (Newhouse) Gillespie.

The museum will also feature artifacts from Lethbridge’s broadcasting history, such as photographs from the launch of the city’s first TV station, CJLH TV, in 1955, which eventually became Global Lethbridge and only recently moved from its original building.

This discussion is part of the Galt Museum’s ongoing programming designed to highlight the history of Southern Alberta and beyond. Other events in September include “Reclaiming Landscapes”, a hands-on workshop about the region’s Blackfoot heritage, and demonstrations of traditional wood block printing and beeswax clay modelling. Museums typically use events such as lectures and workshops to encourage repeat visitors, using media like brochure printing and social media to reach their audience.

“Stand By, 3, 2, 1, You’re On!” will take place on November 12 at the Galt Museums and Archive.
