Neither cool temperatures nor bad weather was enough to keep some two dozen Lethbridge area peace officers from the fundraising task at hand recently.
The law enforcement personnel came from the courthouse, Lethbridge Regional Police Service, and Taber Police Service to participate in the Law Enforcement Torch Run. Together, they raised over $30,000 to help support the Special Olympics.
The 500 kilometer bike ride will take them along highway three all the way to Edmonton. Their route will see the group tackling some very steep terrain, and they will ride all day and night. Some will do it in turns as in a relay, while a few intrepid souls will bike the entire 26-hour long course all on their own.
Once they reach Edmonton, they will meet with other peace officers coming in from Ft. McMurray at the RCMP K Division headquarters.
Last year, they raised $23,000, and they are pleased to see that this year has proved to be an even bigger success. They also noted that while it may be grueling, the ride is also fun. Participants pull together and are sure to help each other when it’s needed.
A bike trip like this can help to not only raise money, but also awareness. Banner printing companies can create special decorations for both the start and finish line, as well as a banner that can be placed on the side of the van that that provides support to the cyclists on their journey.
