Lethbridge food bank launches horticulture class

The Interfaith Food Bank Society of Lethbridge has launched a new educational program, providing online and in-person lessons on growing food.

The program is called the Seed to Supper Garden Workshop Series, and it will run for five weeks. Course contents include how to create an individual growing space, build healthy soil, choose and plant crops and ultimately harvest home-grown fruits and vegetables.

Some sessions will be taught online, but participants will also have the chance to put their learning into action at the Society’s Learning Garden through guided tours and workshops. The goal is to encourage self-sufficiency and help people enter into the growing hobby of community gardening.

The Seed to Supper class is intended to be a recurring series, with a second course already planned. The Learning Garden also hosts events like movie nights, craft classes, and yoga lessons. Programs like this are in part a way to incorporate the community more into the Food Bank’s mission and help to increase local sustainability. Community courses like this often use poster printing, social media and other tools to promote themselves and attract students.

The Interfaith Food Bank Society of Lethbridge’s first Seed to Supper Garden Workshop Series began on February 28 and will run until March 28, with a second program intended to run from April 26 to May 24.
