Lethbridge area fundraiser to return with virtual option
An annual fundraiser that encourages Lethbridge residents to walk and brave the cold will take place again this month, with new options and safety measures introduced.
The Coldest Night of the Year walk benefits Streets Alive, a local organization that helps homeless people and others in need. Walkers can choose between a two-kilometre and five-kilometre loop. This year’s walk will include staggered start times and separated lanes, with participants able to start throughout the day and maintain a social distance from other walkers.
Participants who raise over $150, or $75 for youths, will receive a commemorative toque to wear during their walk. Promotional products like this are often used as incentives or mementos for charitable runs, walks, and events.
This year’s Coldest Night of the Year will also have a virtual option, allowing for individuals or groups to complete their walks in a place of their choice, at any time during the month. As with other charitable walks and runs, participants are encouraged to form teams and raise more money than others, with a leaderboard maintained on the event website. Organizers hope to raise $24,000 for Streets Alive and to attract 100 walkers and 40 teams.
The Coldest Night of the Year walk will take place on February 20, with the route beginning and ending at the Land-O-Lakes Golf and Country Club in Coaldale. Virtual participants can complete their walk at any time up until February 28.
