In honor of Hiroshima Peace Memorial Day, an event will be held at Lethbridge’s Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden next month.
The day will see visitors join others from all over the world who will be folding 1,000 paper cranes to be shipped to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial in Japan. Along with the origami, there will be tours of the gardens, bonsai demonstrations, a cultural activity, a whistling performance, and a tea ceremony.
The tradition of folding the cranes was first started by Sadako Sasaki, who was a very young child who lived through the Hiroshima bombing. Years later, she developed leukemia form radiation exposure, and began folding paper cranes as a symbol of her hope for peace in the world. She had set a goal of 1,000, but passed away before she could reach that number, and her friends took up where she had left off. There is a statue of her holding a golden folded crane at Hiroshima Peace Park.
The gardens will open at 9:00 am on August 6, with the day’s activities scheduled to begin at 10:00 am. They will run throughout the day, with the gates closing at 5:30 pm. Special Banners can be designed and printed for evens such as this.
The Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden can be found at the corner of Mayor Magrath Drive South and 9th Avenue. Further details about the event can be found on its website.
