Calgary authors who have had one of their works published in 2015 are invited to enter this year’s City of Calgary’s W.O. Mitchell Book Prize, which recognizes the best in literature from the local area.
The award
, which was named in honour of well-known author W.O. Mitchell who hailed from the city, is given to a book that the competition’s three-person jury feels is the most deserving. The jury consists of someone from Calgary, someone from Alberta but who doesn’t reside in the city, and someone from Canada who doesn’t live in Alberta. The contest itself is administered through the cooperation of the Writer’s Guild of Alberta and the City of Calgary.
The prize for the winner consists of a $5,000 award. If the piece was written by more than one person, then the amount will be split between all those who took part.
The book chosen to win last year was “How to Breathe Underwater: Field Reports from an Age of Radical Change, which was written by Chris Turner. Award certificates, which can be created using graphic design tools and usually printed on a high-quality certificate paper, can be given to finalists in competitions of this calibre along with any monetary prize.
Those who are interested in taking part in the competition must submit their work by no later than April 15th. An online submission form, as well as guidelines for the contest and also a list of previous winners and other information can be found at the Writers’ Guild website.
