A Calgary organization recently marked its third year of using arable land in the city to grow food and provide for those in need.

Grow Calgary maintains and tends to an urban garden that covers an area equal to four sports fields, which means that it is the largest agricultural project of its kind in the whole country. According to a spokesperson for the organization, Paul Hughes, as many as 5,500 volunteers have lent a hand over the three years that it has been in operation, and this has gone a long way towards helping to make it a success.

He went on to say that so far, it has been able to provide 300 truckloads of food, most of which went to the Calgary Food Bank. He explained that this year, the goal is for it to provide assistance at least 16 different agencies so it can help as many people as possible. Flyers can be used to help promote the efforts of organizations such as this to the community, encouraging people to help in whatever way they can.

Then organization is hoping to expand its current production, and has made an application to the city to use an additional 254 hectares of space along the transportation-utility corridor. Hughes explained that it is currently going to waste, as it could be used to produce a lot of food.
