Calgary recognizes its everyday heroes

For 81 people from Calgary, a recent Wednesday evening was one they will likely always remember.

During the Calgary Police Service Chief’s Awards ceremony, these people – who included 19 citizens, 57 police officers and three firefighters – were recognized for their acts of quick thinking and bravery in the face of sometimes overwhelming odds.

With acts ranging from preventing a kidnapping, to foiling a bank robbery, to saving the lives of children in an accident and adults stranded in rising flood waters, they had all helped their fellow citizens with acts both big and small.

Depending on what had occurred, they were given an Award of Exceptional Recognition, a Lifesaving Award, or an award of valor.

One Award of Exceptional Recognition was granted to a woman who had been on the scene of a hit and run accident, and stopped to help when no one else did. When she realized she couldn’t save the woman, she sat with her in the middle of the heavy road traffic and held her hand so she wouldn’t have to be alone. It was a simple act that made a big difference.
